If you’re installing SQL Server on a machine that has Windows Firewall enabled, you’ll have to configure the firewall to open the correct ports. For a default instance, that’s TCP 1433 for the database engine and UDP 1434 for the SQL Browser (used by client applications to retrieve the dynamic port of a non-default instance of SQL).
